Bhubaneswar: Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma, who assumed office as the new Director General of Police (DGP) on Thursday, advised the officers of Odisha police to work in a coordinated manner with sister security organizations, including Central Police Forces, to combat Maoist menace in the state.
“Odisha Police, in the last one and half decades, have reached to a point of professionalism where they are able to tackle the problem in a very efficient and effective manner. There has been a tremendous transformation on this front since my first posting in the state in 1987. Our training level, operational capabilities and equipment are among the best in the country. The force is well-equipped and motivational level is also very high. Our ultimate objective is to rid the state of this menace,” he said.
Stating that team approach was important for maintaining law and order and investigations, Sharma asked police personnel to ensure that people are treated in a dignified manner at police stations.
The DGP further said that the 3Ts formula of chief minister Naveen Patnaik- transformation, transparency and team work- is equally applicable to police. “We will look forward to effective use of new technology to deal with crimes and support continuous training programmes for skill development of officials,” he added.
Prior to taking charge from his predecessor K B Singh, the new DGP was accorded guard of honour on the police headquarters premises. Sharma then offered rich tributes at the Police Saheed Stamb (sacred citadel of martyrs) here.
The 1986-batch IPS officer was earlier serving as the Director General of the State Vigilance.
An MBBS by qualification and a law degree holder, Sharma, known for his cool and polite demeanour, had joined as Police Commissioner of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack on August 12, 2013. He had earlier served in narcotics control bureau and national security guard.
