Berhampur: The authorities of the state-run Khallikote Junior College in Berhampur suspended nine students, restricting their entry into the educational institution, for an indefinite period following ragging allegations.
According to sources, a Plus II (first-year) girl student had written to the principal on November 19 about being ragged by some senior students on the campus. She further alleged that they were creating disturbance in the classes by bursting crackers and passing comments, making them feel unsafe on campus.
While the anti-ragging committee of the college is probing the allegation, the authorities took action against these students as a precautionary measure. “We have suspended these students following a complaint that they were creating disturbances on the campus. The anti-ragging committee will ensure the absence of these students on the campus”, The PTI quoted college principal Radha Kant Nayak as saying.
He added that the names of these students were submitted to Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M and the local police station as per the recommendation of the anti-ragging committee on October 29.
Notably, six of these students were suspended for a week from the campus in the month of September, as they were found involved in ragging of the junior students.
Meanwhile, the parents have accused the anti-ragging committee of being negligent to such allegations in the past. They have urged the School and Mass Education Department to issue directions to the authorities to take every allegation of harassment and ragging seriously and ensure immediate action.
