Berhampur: Notwithstanding a campaign to curb ragging in educational institutions by Berhampur police, a Class VI student was allegedly assaulted by his seniors at a private school hostel in the Silver City.
According to sources, the incident took place on Wednesday following which the victim’s mother lodged a complaint at Gosaninuagaon police station alleging that eight students, including a Plus-II student, assaulted her son inside the hostel.
Stating that it was not a lone incident, she further alleged that he had been facing both physical and mental torture for the past five months.
Police have booked the eight accused on the basis of the complaint.
It is pertinent to mention here that the victim’s mother had lodged a complaint with the school principal on July 3 and she was assured that such an incident will not happen again. However, no action had been taken against the students.
Two members of Childline also visited the school on September 27 after being informed about the incident, the victim’s mother stated in her complaint.
Speaking about the incident, Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M said that some students at the hostel had a brawl with the Class VI student over a petty issue.
He attributed it to a complaint by the victim to his warden about a student using a mobile inside the hostel premises. As other students are minors, they have been reprimanded with a notice, the SP added.
