New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha’s suspension was revoked on Monday after nearly four months.
Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Rajya Sabha chairman, acted on the motion moved by BJP MP GVL Narasimha Rao.
Rao said in Rajya Sabha the suspension of Chadha so far be taken as “sufficient punishment” and that the House may consider discontinuation of Chadha’s suspension from December 4.
Thanking the Supreme Court and Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar, Chadha said, “During these 115 days of suspension, I received a lot of love and blessings from you people. You all gave me the courage to fight in my struggle.”
The AAP leader was indefinitely suspended from Parliament on August 11 for not seeking permission from some MPs before including them in a proposed select committee to examine the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
The 35-year-old Chadha, youngest member of Parliament from Punjab, was suspended on the last day of Monsoon session for “gross violation of rules, misconduct, defiant attitude and contemptuous conduct”.
Chadha moved the Supreme Court against the indefinite suspension from Rajya Sabha, calling it “arbitrary and illegal.”
The Supreme Court had said that the indefinite suspension of an MP could have very serious repercussions for people’s right to be represented by an individual of their choice.
