New Delhi: The BJP’s Raebareli candidate, Dinesh Pratap Singh on Tuesday conceded defeat to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi even as the counting of votes for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls was underway. In a social media post, Singh sought “forgiveness from the people” of Raebareli and said that the “decision was not in our hands” despite party members working tirelessly to secure a victory in the Congress bastion.
As per the latest Election Commission data, Rahul Gandhi was ahead in the high-profile seat with 3,60,914, while the BJP candidate was trailing with 1,59,870 ballots.
This was Gandhi’s first attempt to retain the Raebareli seat, held by his mother Sonia Gandhi since 2004.
In his post on Facebook, Dinesh Pratap Singh said, “I served the people of Raebareli with great humility and hard work. However, if I have made any mistake in my thoughts, words or deeds during my service or have hurt anyone, then I seek forgiveness.”
“I am very thankful to all well-wishers and party members who worked tirelessly and fought the election very well, but the decision was not in our hands. The public is the form of God, whatever mandate they give will always be accepted with respect,” he added.
The BJP candidate also assured the people of Raebareli of his constant support for the constituency.
