New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi received a death threat on Friday before Bharat Jodo Yatra entered Madhya Pradesh.
A letter threatening that Rahul Gandhi would be killed was found outside a sweet shop in Indore under Juni police station area. Meanwhile, police have started scanning the CCTV footage of the area and are looking for the person who left the letter outside a sweet shop. Police officials told India Today that a case under section 507 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against an unidentified person and an investigation has been launched. The accused in this case might have to face charges under the NSA.
Notably, the threat letter comes a day after Rahul Gandhi targeted Veer Savarkar, saying that he helped the British rulers and wrote a mercy petition to them out of fear. The remarks of Wayanad MP sparked a row and drew criticism and triggered protests.
Showing a copy of Savarkar’s letter seeking mercy, he added, “Savarkar ji wrote in it: I beg to remain, sir, your most obedient servant. When he signed this letter, what was the reason? It was fear. He was afraid of the British.”
Savarkar’s grandson on Thursday lodged a police complaint against Rahul Gandhi in Mumbai for “insulting” his grandfather. Uddhav Thackeray, who heads a faction of the Shiv Sena, said his party has immense respect for VD Savarkar and he does not approve of Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on Savarkar.
Meanwhile, Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson, Tushar Gandhi, joined Rahul Gandhi in the Bharat Jodo Yatra at Shegaon in Buldhana district of Maharashtra on Friday morning. The Bharat Jodo Yatra is in its last leg in Maharashtra and will enter Madhya Pradesh on November 20.
Thane police in Maharashtra have filed a case of defamation against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks against freedom fighter V D Savarkar, reported PTI. The FIR was filed on the basis of a complaint lodged by Vandana Dongre, a functionary of the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
