Rain Plays Spoilsport: INDIA Bloc Defers ‘Public Impeachment’ Of Gyanesh Kumar

New Delhi: Heavy rain forced the INDIA bloc to defer its planned ‘public impeachment’ of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

The event, originally scheduled to be held on Friday at the lawns of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence at 10, Rajaji Marg, will now take place on Saturday.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said the decision was taken as sitting outdoors in the rain would be uncomfortable for senior leaders.

“By consensus, we have decided to postpone today’s program till tomorrow at the same time because of rain. We felt that it will be uncomfortable for seniors to sit there in rain,” Rahul told the media.

INDIA bloc leaders met on Thursday to finalise the programme. Congress general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and K C Venugopal, senior Congress leader Meira Kumar, Mamata Trinamool’s Derek O’Brien, Samajwadi Party’s Harendra Malik, JMM’s Mahua Maji and CPI(M)’s John Brittas were among those who attended the meeting.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will chair the proceedings, Kharge will move the ‘motion’ against the CEC and Rahul will deliver the concluding remarks.

Besides Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, one representative from each INDIA bloc party is likely to address the gathering.

Invitations have also been sent to INDIA bloc MPs for ‘The Public Impeachment of Gyanesh Kumar’.

Opposition leaders also confirmed a joint march to Ramlila Maidan will take place as scheduled on November 1.

The Congress and other parties have accused the CEC of violating the Constitution and undermining electoral democracy.

“The CEC has demonstrably violated the letter and spirit of the Constitution. He has systematically subverted the very foundations of our electoral democracy. He has, to put it bluntly, lied to the Supreme Court,” Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said.

“He has been the willing executioner on behalf of the Diabolical Duo whose turn will come next,” Ramesh said, in an apparent reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
