Rain Starts As Cyclone ‘Dana’ Outer Band Touches Odisha Coast, Heavy Downpour To Persist Till October 26

Bhubaneswar: With cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ inching towards Odisha coast, several parts of the state in the coastal region started getting rainfall under its impact on Wednesday afternoon.

“Radar data from Paradip shows the outer bands of Cyclone ‘Dana’ have reached Bhadrak and Kendrapada,” senior IMD scientist Umashankar Das posted on X

Das clarified that although the cyclone remains about 480 km offshore, its outer bands, consisting of clouds, are influencing local weather.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm over Bay of Bengal is moving north-westwards at a speed of 15 kmph over the past six hours. As a result, several districts in Odisha have begun experiencing rainfall. The intensity of rain is likely to intensify further. Dana is likely to make a landfall as a severe cyclonic storm between between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra port, a stretch of about 70 km, early Friday.

The weather agency said that heavy to extremely heavy rain is likely to continue in several districts of the state till October 26, while the intensity of downpour will be high October 24 and 25 under the impact of the cyclonic storm.

It said heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) and thunderstorm with lightning may occur at isolated places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Puri, and Ganjam in the next 24 hours

October 24: Scattered heavy to very heavy falls (7 to 20 cm) with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20 cm) very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khurda, and Puri.

Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, and Ganjam.

October 25: Scattered heavy to very heavy falls (7 to 20 cm) with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20 cm) very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Cuttack, Kendrapada, and Jagatsinghpur.

Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Khurda, and Puri.

October 26: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Sambalpur, Deogarh and heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Jharsuguda.
