Rainfall Activity Dips In Odisha, Yellow Alert Of Thunderstorm For 2 Days

Bhubaneswar: While no rain warning has been issued till September 29, Odisha may experience heavy downpour thereafter with India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting formation of a low pressure over north Andaman Sea and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal by September 30.

“A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over north Andaman Sea and neighbourhood on September 29. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over north Andaman Sea and adjoining Eastcentral Bay of Bengal during subsequent 24 hours. Thereafter, it is likely to move west-northwestwards with possibility of gradual intensification,” according to the midday bulletin.

In its extended weather outlook for Odisha, the IMD has forecast fairly widespread rain/thundershower from September 29-October 5. Overall rainfall activity likely to be slightly above normal with isolated heavy to very heavy rain in some districts of the state, it said.

Umashankar Das , scientist at regional IMD centre, said rainfall activity would decrease in the state for two to three days from Monday.

The weather agency has issued yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Ganjam districts till 8.30 am on Monday. Light to moderate rain/thundershower is also likely at many places in North Odisha and at a few places in southern districts of the state.

Thunderstorm with lightning warning continues for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Bargarh on September 25, when light to moderate rain/thundershower may also occur at a few places across the state.

While light to moderate rain continue at a few places, there is no weather warning for next 3 days.

The MeT office further said that conditions are becoming favourable for withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon from parts of West Rajasthan during next 24 hours.

Director of CEC at Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University Sarat Chandra Sahu said the low pressure, which is expected by this month-end, may intensify into a depression or deep depression and cause widespread rain in coastal and adjoining pockets.
