New York: Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise may soon be flying into outer space to shoot for a movie.
NASA confirmed that the space agency is working with Cruise to make a movie on the International Space Station (ISS). According to a report in CNN Business, Cruise will stay aboard the station — a multibillion-dollar laboratory that orbits 250 miles above Earth — for the project.
Astronauts have lived aboard the ISS for long periods of time since 2000. Even tourists have stopped by the station by shelling out a high price.
Some films have also been shot on the space station, including a 2002 documentary that Cruise narrated. ‘Apogee of Fear,’ a science fiction, was filmed in space in 2012.
“We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a tweet on Tuesday.
No dates of Cruise’s travel to the space station, or details about other crew members, are available yet.
But if the project does take off, it will mark the first narrative feature film — an action adventure — to be shot in outer space.
The 57-year-old Cruise is a three-time Golden Globe winner and was thrice nominated for Academy Awards. Among his most popular and widely-watched films is the Mission Impossible series.
