Cuttack: Was property dispute the reason behind the brutal murder in the Kanika royal family in Odisha’s Cuttack city? If reports are to be believed, the scion, Shubhendra Narayan Bhajadeo, hacked his mother, Paresh Kumari Devi, to death over a property at Rajkanika.

The property belonged to erstwhile King Rajendra Narayan Bhanjadeo and Paresh, who was his granddaughter-in-law, had inherited some parts of it. She later struck a Rs 4 crore deal to sell off the property. Shubhendra opposed it and killed his mother, in a fit of rage following a heated argument on Wednesday. He was arrested the following day on the basis of a complaint lodged by his sister, Jayanti Samantray.

Police said that the deceased enjoyed supreme authority over the property and did not accede to the demands of his son, which led to frequent quarrels between them.

Besides property dispute, there was a disagreement between the mother and son over the royal scion’s marital life.

Jayanti had earlier told the media that Shubhendra, who is a psychiatric patient and has three wives, would often blame his mother for ruining his life.

“It appears that the act took place in a fit of rage and it was not pre-planned. He believed that his mother had ruined his marital life,” Cuttack city DCP Prateek Singh had said.

Singh denied that a dispute between the mother and son was earlier brought to the notice of the police, as claimed by the complainant. A case on the dispute between the brother and the sister over the share of property, however, is pending in the court, he added.

According to police sources, a chargesheet in the case will be filed within 15 days. The murder weapon has been seized and, scientific evidence, CCTV footage, and the statements of eyewitnesses have been recorded.

An appeal will be made before the court to complete the trial murder case within six months, the sources added.
