Mumbai: Actor Ranveer Singh’s highly-anticipated upcoming war drama ‘Dhurandhar’ has landed in legal trouble after late Major Mohit Sharma’s parents moved the Delhi High Court seeking a stay on the film.
The petition alleges that ‘Dhurandhar’ is inspired by the life, secret missions and martyrdom of Major Sharma, and Ranveer portrays his character in the film.
The petition mentioned that the film’s trailer and other promotional materials have an uncanny resemblance to Major’s life and his undercover missions, Bar and Bench reported.
The petitioners claimed that the filmmakers neither sought permission from them nor from the Indian Army before making or promoting the film, and that Major Sharma’s life story is not a commercial commodity, and cannot be edited for the sake of making profit.
The respondents named in the case include the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the ADGPI, director Aditya Dhar, and Jio Studios.
Advocates Roopenshu Pratap Singh and Manish Sharmaa of Samaanta Law Firm (SLF) are representing Major’s family in the court.

Comparisons between Ranveer’s character in ‘Dhurandhar’ and Major Sharma started doing the rounds soon after the teaser was unveiled a few weeks ago.
When Major Sharma’s brother tagged Aditya Dhar on X (formerly Twitter) seeking confirmation, the filmmaker responded, “Hi, sir – Our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification. I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit Sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family, and in a way that truly honours his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy it has left for all of us.”
The Delhi High Court is yet to fix a date for hearing the petition.
Besides Ranveer, ‘Dhurandhar’ also features Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, and Sara Arjun in lead roles.
Late Major Mohit Sharma, AC(P), SM was a decorated officer who was awarded the Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal.
