Cuttack: On a court’s intervention, a man, who had allegedly raped a girl promising to marry her, tied the knots with her inside the jail where he is lodged.
According to the complaint filed by the girl’s family of Nishintakoili with the police, accused Anshuman Mallick of Salepur had developed an affair with the victim last year.
In November, the girl went with Anshuman to get married without informing her family. But Anshuman raped her and fled without marrying her, she stated in the complaint. Later, she informed her family about the incident.
Acting on the complaint, Nischintakoili police traced Anshuman and arrested him. After the police produced him in the court, he was housed in Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttack district.
The Udhhar Foundation of Choudwar came to know about the case and mediated in the matter. Its members convinced Anshuman to get married to the girl and moved POCSO Court in this regard.
After Additional Sessions Judge (POCSO Court) granted permission for the marriage, the Udhhar Foundation organised the marriage ceremony in the presence of the family members of both bride and groom on the jail premises.
“All the rituals of marriage were performed as per the tradition. Senior officials of Choudwar Circle Jail were present during the function,” said Udhhar foundation president Narottam Das.
“As the court had given the permission, the marriage of UTP Anshuman was performed with the rape victim. The function was held smoothly amid COVID restrictions,” said Choudwar Circle Jail Superintendent Satya Prakash Swain.
