Hyderabad: Earthquake measuring 5.3-on the Richter Scale jolted Telangana’s Mulugu district on Wednesday morning.
According to reports, tremors were witnessed in Hyderabad and parts of Andhra Pradesh. Some mild shock were also reported at few parts of Malkangiri, Nabarangpur & Koraput, which are moderately prone zone.
The National Center for Seismology stated that the quake struck at 7:27am. There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage caused to any property. Experts advised people to stay alert. The authorities were assessing the situation. With videos of Hyderabad witnessing the tremors gone viral on social media, netizens claimed it to be the strongest in 20 years.
“EQ of M: 5.3, On: 04/12/2024 07:27:02 IST, Lat: 18.44 N, Long: 80.24 E, Depth: 40 Km, Location: Mulugu, Telangana,” the National Center for Seismology posted on X.
This is a rare instance that Telangana experienced seismic activity. There are four Seismic zones in India: Zone II, Zone III, Zone IV, and Zone V. Zone V witnesses the highest level of seismicity, whereas Zone II comprises areas that have the lowest level of seismicity. Telangana is grouped in Zone II.
About 11% of the country falls in zone V. About 59% of the landmass of India (covering all states) is prone to earthquakes.
