Geneva: A rarest of rare, purple-pink diamond was sold for a whopping $26.6 million at Sotheby’s in Geneva earlier this week. The auction house described the diamond as “a true wonder of nature”.
Bidding for the flawless gem, named ‘The Spirit of the Rose’, opened at $16 million. When the hammer went down, it had finally gone up to a record price which was shelled out by a telephone bidder who remained anonymous.
Jewellery expert Benoit Repellin said the 14.83-carat stone was the largest pink diamond with that colour grading to go on the block.
Sotheby’s informed that the diamond was mined in Russia in July 2017, and was cut from the largest pink crystal ever found in that country.
Coloured stones, and especially high-quality pink diamonds, are very expensive and highly sought after.
“The lucky buyer could well profit from prices soaring for pink diamonds in the coming years thanks to increased rarity,” said Tobias Kormind, managing director of 77 Diamonds, Europe’s largest online diamond jeweller.
