Rash Driving: Odisha Bans Students From Riding Bikes To Schools

Bhubaneswar: To check accidents due to rash driving and ensure strict implementation of the new Motor Vehicle Act, the Odisha government has banned school students below 18 years from riding two-wheelers on road.

The Directorate of Higher Secondary Education has written to the principals of all higher secondary schools in the state in this regard.

The decision, which was reportedly taken in the recent State Road Safety Council Meeting, comes against the backdrop of minors riding two-wheelers to school every day in urban areas, violating the law and putting themselves in danger.

THE GUIDELINES:

  1. Underage children of the school should not drive motorized vehicles to reach school
  2. Implement school bus policy
  3. 3-wheelers should not carry more school students than the prescribed limit, and to abide by the Rules of Road Safety as prescribed by the State Road Safety Council.

“Any deviation in the matter may be brought to the notice of local RTO immediately for the safety of the school students,” it further said,

Besides keeping a watch on the students, the school authorities have been directed to inform the guardians regarding the new guidelines.

The RTOs have been asked to cancel the registration certificates of school buses that do not possess fitness certificates and initiate against the school buses and vans for overloading.
