Ratan Tata’s Untold Love Story: A Life Without Marriage, But Not Without Love

New Delhi: Despite being one of India’s most successful businessmen, Ratan Tata, former chairman of Tata Group, never married. Although he remained single throughout his life, it was not for lack of love or desire to marry. In fact, Tata came close to marriage multiple times, as he revealed in a candid interview in 2011, where he discussed his romantic past.

Tata, who has no children, disclosed that he was on the verge of tying the knot on four different occasions but stepped back each time due to various reasons. One such relationship almost culminated in marriage while he was living in Los Angeles, but his grandmother’s intervention caused him to reconsider, ultimately leaving him unmarried.

One of the most talked-about relationships in Ratan Tata’s life was with Bollywood icon Simi Garewal, who ruled the silver screen during the 1970s and 80s. Their relationship, though largely private, was believed to be serious, with many expecting the couple to marry. However, fate had other plans.

Simi Garewal, known for her elegance and talent in films such as Mera Naam Joker, Karz, and Do Badan, once described Tata as the “perfect gentleman,” praising his humility, sense of humour, and genuine nature. “Money was never a driving force for him,” Simi shared in an interview, adding that Tata was more at ease abroad than in India.

The couple, deeply in love, had planned to marry, but for reasons unknown, they parted ways. Simi later married Delhi nobleman Ravi Mohan of the Chunnamal dynasty, but their marriage ended in divorce in 1979. Tata, on the other hand, remained unmarried, focusing on his work and philanthropic efforts.

Tata admitted that despite his success and the fulfilling life he led, he sometimes felt the absence of a wife and family. In an emotional confession to Simi, he shared that work, time, and other commitments kept him from settling down. “There were so many times I came close to marriage, but it just didn’t work out,” he said.

While Tata’s love life never led to a lifelong partner, it is clear that his relationships were meaningful, and he continued to hold on to the hope of finding love. Though he remained a bachelor, his warmth, integrity, and leadership earned him a special place in the hearts of millions.
