Cuttack: The Ravenshaw University authorities on Saturday imposed Rs 500 penalty on 145 girl students for their alleged involvement in detaining Vice-Chancellor Ishan Patro for 12 hours on October 1.
They have been asked to pay the penalty for breaking the rules and regulations of hostels. Earlier, the varsity authorities had lodged a complaint against 10 girlsand a boy student at Malgodown police station.
Demanding direct elections in the university, the agitating students had gheraoed the VC for 12 hours on October 1. Following the incident, the authorities had issued show-cause notice to the four students of Parija girls’ hostel, six students of Daya ladies hostel, 43 of Devi, 17 of Kathajodi, 40 of Mahanadi and 35 of Bhargabi ladies hostel on October 3. Later, they were asked to cough up Rs 500 as penalty for returning the hostels after 9 pm, flouting rules.
However, demanding direct election and protesting against the show-cause notice, some student had been sitting in a dharana since October 3. They are also organizing a Samavesh on Sunday.
“Without any proper reason, the university authority have been cancelling the election since the last two years. We will discuss this at the Samavesh and decide on the future course of action,” the agitating students said.
