RBI’s Rs 169 Cr Greenfield Data Centre In Odisha Set For Oct 25 Launch; Know More

Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Reserve Bank of India’s new greenfield Data Centre and Enterprise Computing & Cybersecurity Training Institute at Info Valley-II in Khordha district near Bhubaneswar on October 25.

The greenfield facility, developed at a cost of Rs 169 crore across a campus spanning 18.55 acres, will function as a critical backup to the central bank’s primary data centre at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai.

Work on the project began after the foundation stone was laid by then RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on March 22, 2023. At the time, Das emphasised the expanding role of technology in central banking and the need to bolster computing infrastructure along with research capabilities in areas such as enterprise computing, cybersecurity and digital technologies. Construction has progressed steadily since, with the integrated campus now ready to enhance the RBI’s data management, disaster recovery and cybersecurity frameworks.

Built to meet stringent global reliability benchmarks, the infrastructure incorporates fault-tolerant systems and multi-layer redundancy to insulate India’s financial sector from operational disruption. It is designed to support core functions including currency management, payment and settlement systems, and regulatory data operations, ensuring uninterrupted functioning of key financial systems even in adverse scenarios.

The site in Info Valley-II was strategically selected due to Khordha’s geographical stability—situated clear of seismically vulnerable fault lines and high-risk international border zones. This low-risk location drastically minimises exposure to both natural disasters and geopolitical vulnerabilities. Analyst further noted that Odisha was picked over major digital hubs like Mumbai and Chennai to insulate the facility from concentrated cyber risks and network vulnerabilities by situating it away from heavy digital traffic corridors and subsea cable landing points.

The campus also houses the Enterprise Computing & Cybersecurity Training Institute, which will focus on research, capacity building and skill development in emerging technology domains relevant to the central bank and the wider financial sector.
