Bhubaneswar: The re-carpeting work of the Biju Patnaik International Airport runway in Bhubaneswar will begin from February, said the airport director Baruda Venkateswara Rao on Monday.
Briefing the media here, he said the work is expected to be completed in 8-10 months.
“Due to the re-carpeting work, the airport will partially remain closed in two phases. While the duration of the shutdown of the airport in the first phase will be from 12 am to 6 am, the duration of the shutdown the second phase will be from 10 am to 6 pm,” he added.
As the airport runway gets uneven due to the friction of the tyres of the aeroplane, it has to be re-carpeted in every 10 years for the safe landing and takeoff of the flight to and from the airport. The Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA) has directed the re-carpeting of the runway of this airport at a cost of Rs 28 crore.
The re-carpeting of the runway of the Bhubaneswar airport was last done in 2007.
The runway re-carpeting work was earlier scheduled to start from November this year, but the later postponed to December 1.
