Washington: Just hours before his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump sparked speculation with a cryptic post on his social media platform Truth Social.
Hinting at a major move on trade and tariffs, Trump stated that he will be introducing ‘reciprocal tariffs’ on Thursday, without revealing details of his latest tariff plan or who it is directed against.
“Three great weeks, perhaps the best-ever, but today is the big one: Reciprocal tariffs. Make America Great Again!!!!” Trump wrote in the early hours of Thursday (Washington time).
Modi landed in Washington earlier in the day, and is scheduled to meet Trump at the White House around 2.30 am IST on Friday (Thursday 4 pm Washington time).
Since the start of his second term as US President on January 20, Trump has levied tariffs on several countries, including China, and kept on hold for 30 days tariffs on goods from neighbouring Canada and Mexico.
India has evaded the tariff hit so far, but Trump has, in the past, spoken about India being one of the targets.
Trump has also announced tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports from next month.
Trump’s moves have raised concerns about a global trade war.
