New Delhi: The national Capital is bracing for extreme conditions on the first morning of the new year.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a red alert for dense fog and extremely cold conditions in Delhi and parts of Punjab on January 1, 2024.
Besides the national Capital, ‘cold day’ conditions with dense fog have been forecast in Punjab’s Amritsar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Pathankot, Patiala, Rupnagar and Tarn Taran districts.
Temperatures are likely to dip by 3 degrees, and hover between 6 and 9 degrees Celsius.
Very dense fog means visibility will be between 0 and 50 metres.
IMD has also issued an orange alert in some parts of Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh for January 1.
“Dense to very dense fog conditions (visibility <50 m) are very likely to prevail in some parts of Uttar Pradesh during 31st December 2023 night to January 2, 2024 morning and in isolated pockets thereafter for subsequent 2-3 days,” IMD stated.
