Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red warning for four districts of Odisha till around 8 pm on Wednesday.
Thunderstorm/lightning accompanied with gusty wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph and moderate to intense rain is likely in Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jajpur and Jagatsinghpur in 3 hours. Similar weather conditions with gusty wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph is also likely in some parts of Bhadrak and Balasore districts during this period.
The MeT office has warned of minor damage to loose/unsecured structures, banana trees and standing crops. People have been advised to keep a watch on the weather and move to safer places accordingly.
Notably, yellow warning for thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph was issued for Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Balasore till Wednesday morning. Thunderstorm with lightning is also likely at one or two places in Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Rayagada and Kandhamal, the IMD said in its midday bulletin.
It had also forecast light to moderate rain at a few places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore and at one or two places in remaining parts of the state.
On May 31, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Boudh, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Nayagarh. Thunderstorm with lightning may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Khurda. Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is likely to occur at a few places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Boudh, Angul, Keonjhar ,Mayurbhanj and at one or two places in rest of Odisha.
The IMD has also forecast no change in the day temperature for another 5 days with mercury soaring to 42 degree Celsius at some places in Interior Odisha.
