Searing Heatwave Grips Odisha, IMD Issues Red Warning; Dip In Temp Likely After 3 Days

Bhubaneswar: With Odisha in the grip of severe heatwave, Sambalpur recorded 37.7°C by 11.30 am on Saturday, a rise of almost 1°C since the previous day.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded red warning of severe heatwave condition, when the departure from normal is at least 6°C, for one or two places in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Kalahandi on March 15-16. Orange warning of heatwave has also been issued for a few places in Angul, Sundargarh, Sonepur and Boudh during this period.

There is also a yellow warning of heatwave for one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Balangir, Gajapati, Cuttack and Khurda on March 15. Hot and humid conditions may prevail at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, and Khurda.

On March 16, heatwave conditions are also likely at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Balangir, Gajapati and Keonjhar. Hot and humid conditions may prevail at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati.

Balasore is likely to experience warm nights on March 15-16.

According to the weather agency, severe heatwave, heatwave, hot and humid and warm nights may continue to prevail in Odisha till March 18.

The intensity of heatwave may decrease from March 17 with orange warning for one or two places in Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir and Kalahandi district. Heatwave conditions may also prevail at one or two places in Keonjhar, Rayagada , Nuapada , Bargarh , Sundargarh and Jharsuguda. Hot and humid conditions are likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati and warm nights at Sonepur, Boudh and Balangir.

On March 18, a yellow warning of heatwave has been issued for one or two places in Balangir, Kalahandi, Boudh, Sonepur, Bargarh and Nuapada districts.

This is followed by a thunderstorm warning for Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak on March 19. Light rain may also occur at Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak on March 19, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh and Jajpur on March 20 and Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Jajpur and Sundargarh on March 21.

The MeT office further stated that the day temperature may fall by 2-3°C after 3 days. However, there will be no large change in the night temperature during the next 5 days, it added.
