New Delhi: The Centre has proposed to exempt hefty registration fee on batter-operated vehicles, a move that could give a big boost to the market for such vehicles in the country.

According to a statement issued by the Press Information Bureau on Thursday, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a draft notification on June 18 to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989 for necessary exemption.

The advantages…

1. The move is aimed at replacing polluting vehicles with battery-operated or electric oness in the country.

2. As per government estimate, sales of battery-powered vehicles could jump to two crore every year with this move. For a low-earning autorickshaw driver, it will entail low capital investment as opposed to purchasing a diesel-powered vehicle.

3. With the gradual shift towards electric vehicles, the government stands to benefit from a reduction in oil imports and free itself from the pulls and pushes of the dollar.

4. Increased use of electric vehicle will meet one of the key policy objectives of Niti Aayog, about complete use of electric cars by 2030.

5. Public urban transport is set to undergo a major rejig in years to come, as the fleet is gradually replaced with battery-operated vehicles, checking urban pollution in the process.

6. As per some reports, India had about 15 lakh battery-operated three-wheeled rickshaws in 2018. The number of other battery-operated vehicles just stands at about 7000.
