Remnants Of Cyclone Gulab To Form Cyclone Shaheen; Where Is It Headed To?

New Delhi: The remnants of Cyclone Gulab will intensify and develop into Cyclone Shaheen in the North Arabian Sea. After Tauktae, it will be the second cyclone to develop in the basin of Arabian Sea this year.

Cyclone Gulab, which had formed in Bay of Bengal, crossed the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast on September 26, and its remnants moved across Telangana and Maharashtra. Gulab’s trail lay as a well-marked low pressure over south Gujarat as on Wednesday morning, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“By Thursday morning, the system will intensify into a depression and continue moving west-northwestward direction. By Friday morning, the depression will further intensify into a cyclonic storm and emerge in the north Arabian Sea,” the IMD stated in its bulletin on Wednesday afternoon.

The cyclonic storm will be identified as Cyclone Shaheed, a name proposed by Qatar. But it’s unlikely to affect India’s coast severely.

Shaheen is expected to move from India’s west coast and head towards Pakistan’s Makran coast.

However, IMD issued ‘red’ alert warning for North Konkan, Gujarat, Kutch and Saurashtra till Thursday. Fishermen from India and Indian Ocean countries have been warned not to venture into the sea till October 2.
