New Delhi: The New York Police on Wednesday dismissed reports claiming that “explosives” were found in a vehicle near the rally site of former US President Donald Trump on Long Island.
In a statement posted on X, the New York State Police said, “Reports of explosives found in a vehicle outside the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, Long Island, this morning are unfounded.”
The US police further clarified that no explosives were found, stating, “The NYS Police is assisting the Nassau Co. PD & the US Secret Service with security at the coliseum for today’s event.”
Reports of explosives found near Trump’s campaign rally surfaced just three days after a second assassination attempt on the former US president. These reports also emerged as Trump was scheduled to hold a campaign rally at 7 pm in Uniondale, New York, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday evening.
Earlier on Sunday, Secret Service agents fired at the would-be assassin, Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, upon spotting the barrel of his gun protruding from the fence at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, and local police subsequently took him into custody.
Police said that Routh set up camp with food and a rifle just outside the 27-hole Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, where the former president was playing.
The Republican presidential candidate also narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on July 13 during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire on the former president with an AR-style rifle while he was speaking to the crowd. The attack resulted in one audience member’s death and two others injured.
Crooks was shot and killed at the scene by a Secret Service sniper.
