Jalandhar: Reputed kabbadi player Sandeep Nangal was shot dead by unidentified assailants during a Kabaddi Cup match in Malian, near Jalandhar, on Monday evening.

Eyewitnesses said about a dozen people attacked Sandeep and fired pumped in 8 to 10 bullets at his head and chest. A video of the scary incident showed spectators fleeing the venue of the tournament.

Jalandhar (Rural) DSP Lakhwinder Singh confirmed the incident.

A professional kabaddi player, Sandeep excelled in the stopper position. He started his career playing at the state level. Thanks to his consistent performances, fans gave him the nickname ‘Gladiator’.

His fame spread far and wide, and he ruled the kabaddi world for over a decade. Besides Punjab and other places in India, Sandeep played in Canada, USA and the UK.

Even as police have started investigating the brutal murder, there is talk of a feud between Sandeep and other members of the major league kabaddi federation which he headed.
