Rescued Himalayan Vulture Shifted To Nandankanan Near Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: The 4-year-old endangered Himalayan Griffon Vulture, rescued by locals in Nayagrah district, was brought to Nandankanan Zoological Park here on Wednesday night.

The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Odisha, had ordered for the same.

The rescued vulture, which is in poor health, has been kept in quarantine for treatment.

With this Himalayan vulture, the number of endangered vulture species at the zoo has increased to 3. This Himalayan Griffon Vulture belongs to the vulture family Accipitridae. These rare vultures are found along the Himalayas and the adjoining Tibetan Plateau.

The locals of Nayagarh district had found the ailing vulture near a poultry farm at Gunduria village on February 21. It is being suspected that the bird lost its direction because of the dense fog and flew to Odisha.

On being informed about the injured bird, the Forest Department had made arrangements for its treatment at Ranapur. Later, the bird was shifted to the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry under Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), Bhubaneswar, for better treatment.
