Barang (Bhubaneswar): Officials of Baripada Forest Range handed over a rare vulture species to the authorities of Nandankanan zoo here on Sunday afternoon.
The age of rare vulture species, known as Himalayan Sinerius Griffon, would be around five years.
According to the Forest officials, these species are generally found along the Himalayan Mountain range bordering Pakistan and search for food while flying at a higher altitude.
However, one of these species lost track due to dense fog condition and after continuously flying for nearly three days fell on the ground as it was exhausted. The vulture was rescued in time when some stray dogs were about to attack it, they said.
The vulture is now kept in the quarantine inside the veterinary hospital inside the zoo. However, the gender of the vulture is yet to be identified.
With this, the total number of vulture of these species in Nandankanan zoo has gone to four.
Earlier, vulture of these rare species were rescued from Puri, Pipili, Bramhagiri and Balasore areas and handed over to the Nandankanan zoo authorities.
