Respite From Heatwave Soon As Odisha Braces For Thunderstorm; IMD Issues Orange & Yellow Alerts

Bhubaneswar: Odisha can expect some relief from the blistering heatwave with the India Meteorological Department predicting thunderstorm activity from Saturday (April 20).

Amid the orange and yellow warning of heatwave, the day temperature in the state, however, is likely to remain 40°C or above at most places and 3-5°C above normal in some districts during the next 2-3 days due to prevailing mainly northwesterly/westerly dry air and high solar insolation, according to the weather agency.

People have been advised to take precautionary measure while going outside during day time between 11 am and 3 pm.

By 2.30 pm on Friday, the mercury had soared past 40°C at 6 places in the state. Jharsuguda was the hottest place at 43.8°C, followed by Sambalpur (42.4°C), Keonjhar (42.2°C), Chandbali (42.2°C), Hirakud (42°C), Rourkela (41.8°C), and Bhubaneswar (41.4°C).

APRIL 19

Orange Warning

Severe heat wave condition may prevail at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Nayagarh, Angul, Boudh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh.

Heatwave condition is also likely at a few places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Khurda, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Koraput, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur.

Yellow Warning

Heatwave condition may also prevail at one or two places in Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, and Sonepur.

Hot and humid weather condition is also likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

APRIL 20

Orange Warning

Severe heatwave condition may persist at one or two places in Nayagarh, Angul, Boudh, and Mayurbhanj.

Heatwave condition is also likely at a few places in Keonjhar, Khurda, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

Yellow Warning

Heatwave condition may prevail at one or two places in Nuapada, Sonepur, Balangir, Jharsuguda, Kalahandi ,Kandhamal, Bargarh.

Hot and humid weather condition may occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also at one or two places in Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Kandhamal.

APRIL 21

Yellow Warning

Heatwave condition may prevail at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, Khurda, Cuttack, Kendrapada, and Jagatsinghpur.

Hot and humid weather condition is also likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may also occur at one or two in Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar districts.

APRIL 22

Yellow Warning

Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati , Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Boudh, and Kandhamal.

APRIL 23

Yellow Warning

Thunderstorm with lightning is likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati , Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, and Dhenkanal districts.

Odisha is also likely to experience light to moderate rain at isolated places from April 20-25.

Usually, Odisha experiences one to three heatwave days in April but this time the state has already recorded six heatwave days in the last 18 days.
