Baripada: The Mayurbhanj administration on Tuesday imposed restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles to resolve the massive traffic jam on NH-49 in Odisha’s Bangriposi ghat.

The restriction was imposed from 6 am and will continue till further order.

According to sources, IICs of Bangriposi and Bisoi police stations have been directed to deploy police personnel on either side of the ghat road to streamline movement of heavy vehicles. “…deploy adequate police personnel on either side of the ghat to control the movement of heavy vehicles alternatively from Bangriposi to Bisoi and Bisoi to Bangriposi in one and half hour gap with effect from 01.10.2024 from 6 am to round the clock until further order,” the notification read.

The vehicles will be parked on the left side of the road on both ends of the ghat, it added.

Breakdown of three trucks on the poorly-maintained NH-49 had resulted in severe traffic congestion leaving many truckers stranded for four days while keeping the highway out of bounds for pedestrians. The congestion extended up to 13 km on the highway. The incident came to light when a netizen shared two videos on X on Sunday morning showing the long queues of heavy vehicles at Maa Dwarseni ghat. The situation went from bad to worse due to delay in arrival of crane at the location for restoration work, which was further hampered by deposition of rocks at various spots following blasts at 10 turns on the ghat road.
