Baripada: A retired state government employee was killed as a paddy-laden truck ran over him in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Saturday.
According to sources, the incident took place when the victim, identified as Gopabandhu Parida of Bisnupur village under Baisinga police station, was returning home on his bicycle from Betanoti.
While he was coming on Brahmapura-Bisnupur road, the paddy-laden truck ran over him. Parida died on the spot.
Following the mishap, local people stopped the truck and thrashed its driver, accusing him of driving recklessly that led to Parida’s death. The driver, identified as Janmejay Bandhani of Badasahi, sustained injuries in the assault.
On being informed, a team from Baisinga police station rushed to the spot and rescued Bandhani from the clutches of the agitated people. As the locals did not allow the truck to be removed from the accident site, the vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road.
While they demanded adequate compensation for the family of Parida, the police were trying to convince them to first let the truck go. Parida, who worked in Finance department of the state government, had retired four years back.
