Bhubaneswar: Retired Odisha IAS officer and former crickter Madan Mohan Mohanty breathed his last at a private hospital here on Wednesday following prolonged illness. He was 76.
Mohanty had served the Odisha government in different capacities, including secretary of water resources, sports and youth affairs and textiles and handloom departments.
Biju Patnaik Sports Award for outstanding performance in sports was instituted in 2001-02 during his tenure as sports secretary.
The 1968-batch Odisha-cadre IAS officer represented Odisha in 25 Ranji Trophy matches and captained the state team in 9 matches. He was a right-arm batsman and right-arm off-breaker bowler and scored one century and six half-centuries in his Ranji career.
He is survived by his wife Kumkum Mohanty, a renowned Odissi dancer and former bureaucrat, and son Yash Madhav.
His younger son and former Odisha Ranji player and lawyer Yashpal had predeceased him.
