RG Kar Rape-Murder Case: Court Finds Sanjay Roy Guilty, Quantum Of Punishment On Monday

Kolkata: Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, has been found guilty in the gruesome rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at the West Bengal government-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.

“You must be punished,” the Additional District & Sessions Court in Sealdah said while convicting Roy under sections 64, 66, 103/1 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita that deal with rape, murder, and causing death.

The detailed verdict and quantum of punishment will be announced on Monday.

The minimum punishment is life imprisonment and maximum punishment is death.

Asked if he had anything to say, Roy reiterated he was not guilty and was being framed.

The judge told the convict he will be heard on Monday.

The body of a trainee doctor was found in a semi-naked state on August 9, 2024 in the seminar room of RG Kar Hospital.

Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10.

The rape-murder case, which triggered a months-long protest and agitation by striking doctors, was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following a High Court order amid allegations that the state government was trying to destroy evidence to shield the accused.

Even as investigators said that Roy was the only culprit, the victim’s family and junior doctors’ groups suspected a wider conspiracy.
