RG Kar Victim’s Parents Slam BJP: ‘Torture, Murder Of Our Daughter Forgotten’

Kolkata: Nearly four months have passed since a trainee female doctor was brutally raped and murdered at the state-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, but her parents have not got justice yet.

On Thursday, the parents expressed unhappiness over the role of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in demanding justice for their daughter.

“It seems that the torture and murder of our daughter have been forgotten by the principal opposition party of West Bengal. But we cannot forget our daughter. We will protest on the road. Common people are with us. Junior doctors are with us,” PTI quoted the deceased doctor’s father as saying.

The parents had wanted to meet Union Home minister Amit Shah during his visit to the state six weeks ago.

“We had written an email seeking an appointment with Amit Shah ji… but there was no response and he didn’t meet us,” said the father.

“We will participate in a rally to (state Health department headquarters) Swastha Bhavan called by junior doctors front tomorrow (Friday),” he added.

The victim’s mother lamented the reinstatement of some junior doctors — accused of patronising ‘threat culture’ in state-run medical colleges — in the West Bengal Medical Council.

“This raises doubts about the intent to bring to book all those responsible for the incident,” she said.

“But we will not sit indoors. Even if anyone is under the impression that the movement for Abhaya (symbolic name given to deceased RG Kar doctor) will fizzle out, we will not let that happen. Our friends will not let that happen,” she said.

After the on-duty doctor’s body was found in a semi-naked state in the seminar room of the hospital on August 9, there was a nationwide outrage. Protests by junior doctors, citizens and prfessionals from all walks of life continued for over a couple of months, demanding justice for the victim.

The CBI, which was ordered to investigate the case by Calcutta High Court, named Sanjoy Roy as prime accused in its chargesheet. The court has framed charges against Roy and the trial is underway.

But the victim’s parents and many believe that there were others involved in the crime who have got away so far.
