Kolkata: Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy moved Calcutta High Court on Monday to seek protection, fearing arrest after he was sent two notices by the Kolkata Police for demanding custodial interrogation of Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal in connection to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.

On Sunday, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “CBI must act fairly . Custodial interrogation of Ex Principal and Police Commissioner is a must to know who and why floated suicide story. Why wall of hall demolished, who patronised Roy to be so powerful, Why sniffer dog used after 3 days.100s of such questions. Make them speak.”

How Kolkata rape and murder as become TMC vs TMC battle?

The heinous crime has not just sent shockwaves across the country, it has triggered tremors of rift within Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress party. According to sources, there is a growing tension within the party over the way in which the state administration handled the case.

After Sukhendu Sekhar Roy made the controversial post on X, TMC party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh was quick enough to counter by writing, “I also demand justice in RGKar case. But strongly oppose this demand regarding CP. After got information He has tried his best. Personally CP was doing his job and investigation was in a positive focus. This kind of post is unfortunate, that too from my senior leader” on the microblogging platform.

Earlier, former Trinamool Congress, Shantanu Sen—who is a doctor himself—had alleged RG Kar Medical College and Hospital had ‘gone to the pits on the last few years.’ He had accused the former principal of the medical college—where the trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered—Sandip Ghosh of giving his coterie a free run in running the institution. Soon, Sen was removed from the post of Trinamool spokesperson.

‘All’s not well in TMC, why is Abhishek silent?’

Amid such developments, political observers have also indicated that Trinamool Congress leader, Abhishek Banerjee—who is usually quite active in party’s day-to-day activities—had remained silent over the issue even as several other ruling party leaders and the TMC supremo, Mamata Banerjee, herself indulging in a political blame-game over the incident, subsequent outrage and the vandalism that took place on the night of August 14 at the RG Kar Hospital. While they have trained the guns at opposition parties for adding political colours to the ongoing protests, Abhishek has so far refrained from launching any attack on any political party.

Rather, he had demanded stringent action against the vandalism, regardless of ‘any political affiliations’ of the ‘culprits.’  “The hooliganism and vandalism at RG Kar tonight have exceeded all acceptable limits. As a public representative, I just spoke with @CPKolkata , urging him to ensure that every individual responsible for today’s violence is identified, held accountable, and made to face the law within the next 24 hours, regardless of their political affiliations. The demands of the protesting doctors are fair and justified. This is the minimum they should expect from the government. Their safety and security must be prioritized,” Abhishek wrote on X.

Meanwhile, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh—who has been changing his stance on the issue quite frequently according to reports—urged ‘Abhishek to be proactive.’ “The Left and Congress are doing conspiracy. We will fight it under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. We need to correct certain mistakes…We will fight, but we need Abhishek Banerjee to be active,” Ghosh wrote on X.

Abhishek had a different viewpoint after Lok Sabha polls’

After the Lok Sabha polls, Abhishek wanted non-performers in the party or administration to be removed, according to a News 18 report. But, this didn’t go down well with a faction of TMC leaders, sources said. Later, he went for his eye-check and since then, he has apparently not been vocal inside the party. However, he was vocal about his constituency in the Parliament during the recent sessions. According to sources, there is a rift between the juniors or young leaders and the old timers in the Trinamool.
