London: In his first words after being chosen as UK’s next Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak said it was the ‘greatest privilege’ of his life.
“I am humbled and honoured to have the support of my colleagues and be elected leader of rthe Conservative Party… It is the greatest privilege of my life to be able to serve the party I love and give back to the country I owe so much to,” one of UK’s youngest PMs told his fellow-MPs at the Conservative Party headquarters.
“UK is a great country but faces profound economic challenges. We need stability and unity, and I will make it my utmost priority to bring our country together,” the former Chancellor of Exchequer in the Boris Johnson government said.
Pledging to serve the country with ‘integrity and humility’, Sunak said: “I will work day in and day out to deliver for the British people.”
Sunak, who replaces Liz Truss, began his short speech by paying tribute to his predecessor for her “dignified leadership” under difficult circumstances “abroad and at home”.
Truss was UK’s shortest serving PM, having been in office for just 45 days.
