Road Safety Drive: Know Penalty For Violation Of Traffic Rules In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The State Transport Authority (STA) will launch a special drive against violation of traffic rules by vehicle drivers in Odisha from August 16.

During the special drive, the traffic police has been empowered to impose penalty on the drivers who would be found violating the rules, according to an STA release.

As per the rules, The two-wheeler driver not wearing helmet would be imposed a hefty penalty of Rs 1,000. Since wearing helmet is mandatory for the pillion driver in the state, those violating would face cancellation of driver’s licence for three months.

Similarly, penalty of more than Rs 500 would be imposed if three persons ride on a two-wheeler. The minors (below 18 years) driving the vehicle will also face a hefty fine.

The special drive will be carried out on all state highways and national highways going through the state. The 15-day drive would continue from August 16 to 31.

The STA decided to launch the drive after the violation of traffic rules on national highwaya across the state came to its notice. “Due to continuous enforcement of rules, people are using helmets in urban areas, but are unfortunately avoiding wearing helmets on highways where protection is much more needed,” Sanjay Biswal, Joint Commissioner Transport, Road Safety, said in the release.

It may be noted that 1,308 people, including riders (868) and pillion riders (440) of two-wheelers, were killed in road accidents in 2021. Most of them were not wearing helmet. A total of 1,280 people were grievously injured and 747 suffered minor injuries in accidents involving two-wheelers.
