Bhadrak: Armed robbers allegedly looted Rs 22 lakh cash and Rs 40 lakh worth of gold jewellery from a businessman’s house in Odisha’s Bhadrak district.
The incident occurred late on Friday night at Gangadhar Mallik’s house a Ambroli village near Talanaga canal embankment under Bhadrak Rural police limits.
According to family members, Gangadhar along with his wife and minor son were having dinner around 9.30 pm when two men stormed their house and pointed a gun to Gangadhar’s head. Seven more persons joined them and the group asked the family to move inside, befo
re locking the main door.
They held the family at gunpoint as they proceeded to steal the valuables from the house. Gangadhar’s wife handed over the keys to their almirah, when they demanded it. “They stole around Rs 22 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs 20 lakh,” Gangadhar’s wife told a local news channel.
Six of the intruders were carrying guns. After emptying the coffers, the robbers locked the house from outside and fled.
Locals spotted the locked house and after checking, rescued the family members. Gangadhar filed a complaint with Bhadrak Rural police station, who reached the spot and launched an investigation.
The businessman had withdrawn the cash to purchase a piece of land. Police are probing if there is a nexus between local and inter-state robbery gangs, who pass such information to plan and execute a theft.
The miscreants were speaking in Odia and Hindi among themselves, further pointing to a possibility of collusion between robbery gangs.
