Rourkela: The Rourkela General Railway Police (GRP) arrested one of the accused involved in the abduction and gang rape of a private engineering student of Rourkela in Lotapahar area of Jharkhand. He was arrested from Chakradharpur in Jharkhand on Monday.
Rourkela Government Railway Police (GRP) SP, Ajay Pratap Swain confirmed that six persons were involved in the gang rape. All the accused belong to Chakradharpur, he added.
According to sources, the police have formed a six-member team to arrest the accused persons involved in the case. The team will arrest the others soon, said police sources.
The victim was waiting at the railway station in Rourkela to go to her native place in Jharsuguda on December 31 to celebrate New Year with her family when a youth, identifying himself as her brother’s friend, convinced her to board a Jharkhand-bound train saying that due to repair of the rail track, the train will be diverted through Jharkhand.
As the train stopped at Lotapahad station, the youth asked the girl to get down and board a bus to Jharsuguda. Later, he took her to a house on the pretext of having lunch and kept her confined. The youth later called five-six of his friends and they raped the girl for two days.
The accused later left the girl in a deserted area at Lotapahad on January 2. The girl informed the matter to the locals, who accompanied her to the Chakradharpur police station to lodge a complaint. Police later sent the girl to Rourkela where she lodged a complaint with the GRP on January 3. She later returned to her house and narrated the ordeal to her family members.
The family members had also lodged a missing complaint with the Sector-3 Police Station in Rourkela on January 3.The girl has told the police that she can identify the house at Lotapahad where she was confined.
