Bhubaneswar: Did you know that it is illegal to wear chappals or sandals while riding geared motorcycles?
If you are not wearing covered shoes while riding a motorcycle, you can be fined Rs 1,000. This law existed earlier too. But under the amended Motor Vehicles Act, the fine has been increased and repeat offenders can face 15 days in jail.
The logic behind this is that slippers or sandals can interfere with gear shifting and potentially lead to an accident. Also, this can lead to injuries during a fall.
Safety-wise, experts recommend motorcycle boots, but shoes are enough legally.
In terms of motorcycles, the pillion rider also needs to wear a helmet.
