New Delhi: Assets worth Rs 18,000 crore have so far been recovered by banks from fugitives Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.
India’s Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Justice AM Khanwilkar-led Supreme Court bench on Wednesday that total proceeds of crimes of the trio in Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) cases pending before the apex court amounts to Rs 67,000 crore.
“The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the cases of Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi has managed to confiscate assets worth over Rs 18,000 crore due to orders passed by the courts under PMLA,” Mehra said.
The Enforcement Directorate has filed chargesheets against all three, who are wanted in India. Mallya and Nirav Modi are in the UK, while Choksi is in Antigua & Barbuda.
Extradition of Mallya and Modi has been ordered by Westminster Magistrates Court. In Mallya’s case, extradition has been confirmed by High Court and the liquor baron has been denied permission to appeal in Supreme Court.
Mallya and Modi have also been declared as Fugitive Economic Offenders by PMLA court in Mumbai.
