Bhubaneswar: In a first in Bhubaneswar since model code of conduct for upcoming elections came into force, the Commissionerate Police have seized Rs 3.60 lakh cash from an SUV during night blocking near Omfed Chhak under Chandrasekharpur police limits.
According to police sources, the seizure was made from a resident of Chandaka area around 2 am. He “failed” to give a satisfactory reply for transporting the cash so late in the night on Saturday. “Since the model code of conduct is in force, cash carried by individuals is being seized during vehicle inspections in case of any suspicion in accordance with the directive issued by the Election Commission. They can later appeal before the appropriate authority and we will act according to the order,” said IIC of Chandrasekharpur police station Prakash Chandra Majhi.
The person was also detained for questioning, he added.
The ECI has put a limit of Rs 50,000 on cash that can be carried by individuals without supporting documents. The law enforcement agencies have also been put on high alert to prevent movement of cash, liquor, jewellery and other freebies that could be used to influence voters and ensure free and fair polls.
Earlier, Rs 1.95 lakh cash was also seized from a two-wheeler’s storage unit during checking near Binika College Chhak.
In Odisha, inducements valued at Rs 118.65 crore were sized between March 1 and April 17. The enforcement agencies seized Rs 2.7 crore in cash, liquor valued at Rs 18.19 crore, drugs and narcotics worth Rs 43.69 crore, precious metals worth Rs 7.17 crore and freebies and other items worth 47.44 crore between March 1 and April 17, according to the state election commission.
