Mumbai: Stand-up comedian Pranit More is in trouble over a controversial ‘Rs 370 biryani remark’ made during his show.
Maharashtra cyber police on Thursday registered a case against Pranit following widespread backlash online over the past few days.
The controversy erupted after a video from Pranit’s show went viral on social media. In the now-deleted video, a person in the audience is seen narrating a dating experience.
The man, identified as 23-y
ear-old Himanshu Jangra, is heard saying that he spent Rs 370 for a chicken biryani on a date, which entitled him to something in “return”, implying physical intimacy.
Netizens slammed both Pranit and Jangra. Both Male and female users expressed their displeasure, calling out Jangra for sharing details of his date in public, and Pranit for continuing to laugh, along with the crowd, without interrupting him.
Apologies and job termination
Seeing the intensity of online resentment, Jangra issued an apology and also deactivated his social media account.
He also lost his job as Starvik Design terminated his employment, with founder Vivek Vishwakarma stating that the comments were “offensive” and did not reflect the company’s values.
Pranit also apologised, saying that “comments made by the audience member do not reflect my views”.
However, he faced questions on why he did not stop Jangra when he made the vile remarks.
Several netizens were furious that Pranit allowed such insensitive comments to be made on the show and demanded strict action against him.
