New Delhi: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Friday, seized over 85 kg of gold worth Rs 42 crore from New Delhi and Gurugram. The gold had been smuggled in the form of machine parts and was being melted and moulded into different shapes. It was recovered after conducting search operations in several properties in Delhi’s Chattarpur and neighbouring district Gurgaon, ANI reported.
“The suspects were smuggling gold into India from Hong Kong using the air cargo route. The intelligence indicated that the gold smuggled in the form of machinery parts was being melted and moulded into bar/cylinder shapes before being disposed of in the local market,” officials were quoted as saying.
Four foreign nationals have been arrested. Two of those arrested are from South Korea, while the other two belong to China and Taiwan, officials said.
The ”EI” laminates of the transformers were found to have been made of gold-coated with nickel, essentially to hide the identity of the gold.
