Bhubaneswar: Team India’s second match at the Asia Rugby Sevens U18 Girls Championship turned out to be a one-sided contest as it defeated Bangladesh 89-0 at Kalinga Stadium here on Saturday.
High in confidence after an impressive win against UAE the previous evening, the girls seemed unstoppable today.
They had put up an impressive show in front of the home crowd and beat UAE 22-5. All five players from Odisha – Sumitra Nayak (vice captain), Soni Mandangi, Jemamani Naik, Lija Sardar and Parbati Kisku – were in the team that was fielded against UAE.
The girls will now take on Sri Lanka to wrap up their group matches.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had inaugurated the event last evening. “This is yet another historic event as this championship is the first ever International Age Rugby Tournament to be hosted in India. Being hosted ahead of the Men’s Hockey World Cup, this event is going to set the sporting spirit of the city soaring,” he said, while welcoming players from 12 countries.
