Barbil: Commemorating World Environment Day 2019 with the theme ‘Beat Air Pollution’, Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) organised a mini-marathon and plantation programme at the pellet plant premises at Barbil on Wednesday.
More than 200 participants from various age groups took part in the ‘Run for clean air’ event. Holding placards bearing slogans like “Be fair, don’t pollute air”, the children took a pledge to save the environment.
To mark the day, Unit Head of JSPL Barbil, Suresha G, other officials and employees of the company planted about 200 fruit-bearing saplings of several species in the plant premises. Enthusiastic children were also seen planting saplings and watering them.
On the occasion, Suresha G said, “Often we can’t even see it, but air pollution is everywhere. We can’t stop breathing, but we can do something about the quality of our air. JSPL is committed to making its plant and peripheral villages a cleaner and greener place.”He stressed the dangers and harmful effects of air pollution and cited various human activities that pollute the air.
The event concluded with a pledge by the children and others to strive towards a cleaner and healthier environment.
In the prize distribution ceremony, as many as 50 children and employees received prizes for winning in several competitions including poster making, slogan and essay writing on “Beat Air Pollution” theme.
