Moscow: A court here on Thursday fined Wikimedia Foundation 2 million roubles ($24,525) for failing to remove what the court termed “fake information” about Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, Interfax reported.
This is not the first time that the owner of online encyclopaedia Wikipedia has been fined. In its stated policy of cracking down on independent sources of information, the Russian government has imposed a string of financial penalties on Wikimedia Foundation.
Wikimedia has continuously maintained that information which Russian authorities have complained about was well sourced and in line with Wikipedia standards.
