Kyiv: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke to Narendra Modi on Saturday and urged the Indian Prime Minister to extend his under-attack country ‘political support’ in in UN Security Council (UNSC).
India earlier abstained from voting at the UNSC meeting, a decision which found Russia’s approval.
Russian forces continued to pound Ukraine cities for a third day, closing in on the country’s capital Kiev.
In a tweet, Zelensky said he had urged the Indian PM to ‘stop the aggressor together’.
“Spoke with Indian Prime Minister @narendramodi. Informed of the course of Ukraine repulsing Russia aggression. More than 100,000 invaders are on our land. They insidiously fire on residential buildings. Urged India to give us political support in UN Security Council. Stop the aggressor together,” Zelensky tweeted.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a press statement that the PM expressed deep anguish about the loss of life and property due to the ongoing conflict and reiterated his call for an “immediate cessation of violence and a return to dialogue”.
Modi spoke to Putin on Thursday night and urged for a cessation of violence and resolution of NATO-related issues through dialogue.
